Introduction to TouchTax
TouchTax provides easy and affordable access on your Apple iPad or iPhone, Google Android Phone or Tablet (and Barnes & Nobel Nook), Amazon Fire Tablet, HP/Palm TouchPad Tablet or Phone to all sections of the latest edition of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended (the Code), and the Treasury Regulations set forth in Title 26 of the Code of Federal Regulations (the Regulations). The application’s ultimate goal is to replace your physical copies of the Code and Regulations with electronic versions that are always up-to-date, while giving you some frequently requested advanced features making it easy to read and manage the law. The idea for TouchTax arose from my need for a quick method to look up tax sections during my tax LL.M. studies and my work as tax attorney. It was not, initially, intended to replace physical editions, but has now developed into an ideal replacement, as you will hopefully notice.
Sources for Internal Revenue Code and Regulations
The Code and Regulations incorporated into TouchTax are full version electronic adaptations of the official law published by the Office of the Law Revision Counsel of the United States House of Representatives, the Treasury Department and the U.S. Government Printing Office. As of February 2012, TouchTax contains the latest publications of the Code (current through January 1, 2011) and Regulations (current through April 1, 2011). TouchTax is expected to be updated as soon as new versions of the Code and Regulations are made available – and currently the author anticipates making these updates available free-of-charge via the Apple iTunes (iPad and iPhone), Google Android, Amazon Android App Store and HP/Palm App Market in the form of future application updates.
Where to Download
TouchTax is available online for between $0.99 and $2.99 – a ridiculously low price considering the professional features of the application. There are few comparable applications available in this category, and most competing applications require separate, expensive, application purchases for the Code and Regulations. Support for TouchTax is provided online at this Web site (http://touchtax.blackcatworks.com) and via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to receiving your feature requests. Most features in this current version of TouchTax result from user comments and feedback.
TouchTax includes the ability to load and read all 7,700+ sections of the Code and Regulations offline without the need for an Internet connection. As a result of user feedback, I’ve also added a new keyword search function (which, however, does require an Internet connection) allowing you to search Code and Regulation sections based on exact keyword matches as well as natural language relevancy hits. TouchTax also permits you to add individual notes to Code and Regulation sections and to email entire Code or Regulation sections along with your notes (which the author thinks is a very convenient feature!). If you have access to an HP printer with wireless networking, you can also use TouchTax to print a Code or Regulation section. TouchTax also has a bookmark feature, permitting you to bookmark frequently referenced sections, as well as other relevant links, including a link to lookup IRS tax forms. If you enjoy using TouchTax, please consider leaving positive feedback in the application market. Read “Getting Started” for more information on how to get started with your Code and Regulation reading using TouchTax.*
* Note: The features described above and in “Getting Started” refer to TouchTax version 2.0.0. Currently (February 5, 2012), this version is available for HP/Palm webOS 3.0.x only. A corresponding update for TouchTax for Google Android/Amazon Fire/Barnes & Noble Nook and Apple iPad and iPhone is being completed and will be available for download soon (expected by March 2012).
